Arcare Templestowe features:
With large private suites, a boutique café, hairdressing salon, movie theatre and intimate dining and lounge rooms, Arcare Templestowe breaks the conventional aged care approach and reimagines spaces for later in life as premium, connected, inspiring and aspirational. VIA Architects and the Arcare design team have taken a fresh approach to the way residents will experience, interact and inhabit the space. High-quality materials, light-filled spaces, and a strong connection to the environment raise the bar on lifestyle and remove the stigma typically associated with aged care facilities.
A high-end aesthetic has been achieved with careful attention to spatial layout, furniture, fittings and fixtures. We aimed to create an aspirational space that reconceptualises this next stage in life as a place to carry on hobbies and relationships. Friends and family are equally welcome to enjoy the space with residents.
The bright entrance hall draws in views of the beautiful landscaping outside. The open plan layout creates a sense of freedom and independence for residents, and yet excellent visual connectivity supports staff to see and care for them. The facility is an attractive workplace for high-calibre healthcare professionals.
With a planning permit in place, and limits on height and footprint, there were significant constraints in achieving the programming aspirations of the client. The design has successfully navigated the balance of operational considerations and residents’ aspirations.
At a micro level, the design creates a sense of connected community for residents and their families, and encourages interaction with nature for mental stimulation and wellbeing. On a macro scale, this design is a precedent that contributes to the wider conversation about ageing in place and with dignity in Australia and serves as a precedent for others designing for this sector.
Lifestyle Events
The Arcare Templestowe aged care communities provide opportunities for everyone to get involved. Whether it be small social gathering in the café, group excursions on the residence bus, guest speakers, hobby groups or just the day-to-day conversations with familiar team members, each day offers a range of options to choose from.
These regular interactions and social opportunities are sensitively designed to enable clients to form meaningful friendships with each other, team members and volunteers.
Dedicated Assignment
Relationship First Approach to celebrating and supporting old age is not only unique to Arcare, it’s also considered by aged care experts globally to be at the forefront of elder-care.
One of the most important ways of supporting the development of these relationships is the internationally recognised Dedicated Assignment, which Arcare won a 2015 Better Practice Award from the Australian Aged Quality Agency.
Arcare’s Dedicated Assignment involves all team members committing to work regular shifts with exactly the same small group of clients every time they come to work.
About Arcare
Arcare has twenty two aged care residences throughout Metropolitan Melbourne and Greater Geelong. They also operate a home care division, which provides transport, domestic, social and disability support services, as well as home care packages.
From 20 September 2024, the following aged care fees will become effective:
The Basic Daily Care Fee increases to $63.57 pd (from $61.96 pd).
The Fully-Supported Asset Threshold increases to $61,500 (from $59,500).
The Non-Supported Asset Threshold increases to $206,039 (from $201,231).
The maximum Daily Accommodation Contribution (DAC) for refurbished / non-refurbished rooms will be $69.49 pd / $45.31 pd respectively.
The effective Refundable Accommodation Contribution (RAC) for a refurbished facility, above the 40 % fully supported ratio, will be $303,395 which will put pressure on persons looking for a fully supported placement, given that the average RAD is now higher than this amount.
The Maximum Permissible Interest Rate (MPIR) has not yet been finalised for 1 October 2024, however recent RBA inaction suggests that the MPIR will remain around the current 8.36% pa.
The Basic Daily Care Fee and some aged care thresholds are indexed to the Age Pension. On the 20 September 2024, the single age pension increases from $1,116.30 fn to $1,144.40 fn. This is based upon recent increases in the cost of living reflected in the Pensioner & Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI).

From , the Government has started to use the STAR RATING system for registered aged care homes (new homes will be allocated a Star Rating after 12 months of operation).
Star Ratings are displayed on the Aged Care Provider Search within the My Aged Care website.
The Star Rating is based upon 5 levels with the middle rating denoting only a minimum baseline of ‘Acceptable’ care quality and services.
The Star Rating System has revealed that 41 % of aged care homes are performing at a 5-star (excellent) or 4-star (good) level.
Star Ratings also reveal that astonishingly 5 % are performing below the minimum standards set, receiving a dismal and disturbing (Improvement Needed) or (Significant Improvement Needed) Star Rating.
We support full public disclosure of those aged care homes that are making the effort to exceed the regulated standards and community expectations.
We also support the naming of aged care homes that do not currently provide quality levels of aged care services to the frail elderly and vulnerable members of our community.
The Star Rating system is a key component of the aim for continuous improvement to our aged care system.
