In 1976 Camberwell City Council committed to building a hostel for Senior Citizens of the municipality. A Federal Grant to provide 80% of the capital had been promised, land was secured, and the “Camberwell Senior Citizen Hostel Society” was established.
Councillor Gerry Gaffney was the driving force behind this project and, by a unanimous Council vote, the hostel was named “Gaffney House” in his honour. Gaffney House was officially opened in 1981. Cr. Gaffney set his sights on the next goal and a 30 bed nursing home was constructed adjacent the Hostel – opening in 1991.
In 1992 Camberwell City Council decided to relinquish responsibility for the facility. It established Lynden Aged Care Association Incorporated and appointed a Board of Governance to oversee the operations of the facility. A volunteer Board continues to serve the community and refreshes its membership regularly to ensure a broad skill mix is maintained.
The Board of Governance appoints the Chief Executive Officer who is delegated the responsibility for the management of the facility and the employment of suitable staff.
The admission policy gives priority entry to persons from the City of Boroondara, their primary caregivers or next-of kin.
In 2001 the Board undertook a significant renovation to Gaffney House and oversaw the construction of a 20 bed Extra Services wing which was completed in 2003. Minor capital work to Lynden Nursing Home was also undertaken at this time.
This facility provides a “home away from home” for its residents and each resident in the Hostel has a private bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. The Nursing Home accommodation is single or shared rooms with shared bathrooms. Additional Services are available.
Lynden Aged Care has wonderful feature gardens and varied lounge and recreation areas. A comfortable 12 seater bus takes residents on outings and there is a wide recreation program. Music Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Hairdressing are all available on site.
A significant capital works program to rebuild the nursing home and provide additional high care beds was completed in 2018.
